How to prevent non-binary rubies from compiling every time

Two successive builds had this same output, and took about 6 minutes longer than usual. I had assumed it would compile ruby once and cache it.

ruby-2.3.1 is not installed - installing.

Hi there,

Since you’re using our 14.04 build image, Ruby 2.3.1 is preinstalled. You can specify it in circle.yml like so:

machine:
  ruby:
    version: 2.3.1

That should solve the problem.

@tom thanks for the reply, but it isn’t terribly helpful because it’s 3 months after the fact, so of course Ruby 2.3.1 is preinstalled at this point. However, the same thing will happen the next time a new Ruby comes out and I want to run my builds against it, and they will run very slowly until a precompiled binary is available.

Thanks for the feedback. Two things should improve this going forwards:

  • our ability to roll out updates to the 14.04 image is much improved compared to 12.04 so it’s easier for us to add new versions in a timely fashion
  • we are working on some backend changes that will provide a much better option for customers around versions of software available
