Similar to the situation a year ago (see No updates to ubuntu-2204 machine images since Nov 2024? ), there seems to have been a pause on updates to the Ubuntu machine images - the most recent tags are from September 2025, eight months ago. The machine-images policy page still indicates that updates will be roughly every 3 months, but that does not seem to be true for the past couple of years. Will the update cadence be restored, or is there new guidance?
Thanks for the question! Good news - the images are actively maintained. We’ve released ubuntu-2204:2026.02.20 / ubuntu-2404:2026.02.20, and most recently 2026.05.1 for both families, so you’ll want to update your pinned tags if you’re still on September 2025.
Release timing can vary release to release depending on testing and what’s going into a given image, so the interval between releases isn’t always exactly three months - but the images continue to be actively supported and updated.
