Hi. It looks like there have been no updates to the ubuntu machine images (e.g. for 2204) since the November 1 2024 release. That means that pyenv does not support python 3.12.8, or (of course) any python version released since November.
Is an update expected/planned? Thanks!

This applies also to the convenience images and the published support policies are not being adhered to.
The CircleCI Linux VM images support policy says:
- We aim to maintain, support, and release the two most recent LTS versions of Ubuntu.
current version of the image will receive updates approximately every three months.
We always aim to release a version of this image every three months.
Image updates to both machine images and convenience images would be appreciated, so hopefully there is sufficient capacity in the CircleCI teams to carry out these tasks!
@circleci-community What’s going on? We were somewhat counting on this to avoid flakey installs/other approaches to get “current” Node. Did the policy change?
I don’t see any change to the policy as posted on CircleCI Linux VM images support policy - CircleCI
Apparently there is nobody from CircleCI allocated to implementing the policy, otherwise there might have been newer images released and somebody from CircleCI might also have responded here.
Machine images > ubuntu-2204 > Images Tags shows the following releases for last year:
- 2024.11.1
- 2024.08.1
- 2024.05.1
- 2024.04.4
- 2024.04.3
- 2024.04.2
- 2024.04.1
- 2024.03.1
- 2024.02.7
- 2024.01.2
- 2024.01.1
In the current year, 2025, there have been no corresponding releases, and there hasn’t been any explanation why CircleCI has stopped providing this update service.
So, CircleCI, please resume the update service and abide by the release policy for Linux VM images. I don’t want to think about the consequences if this issue can’t be resolved!
Hi @anthonycastro
You were very helpful recently with updates to GitHub - CircleCI-Public/cimg-node: The CircleCI Node.js Docker Convenience Image., so thank you again for that!
Would you also be able to assist with getting the Ubuntu machine images updated?
Hi everyone, we’re currently working on an updated image policy that’s still a work in progress. As we work to finalize it, we will be providing updates to our machine images within the next couple of months. Thank you for your patience.

Thank you @anthonycastro for your reassurance that the images will be updated!
I’m a little surprised to see the vague timeline of “the next couple of months”, given that the cadence is supposed to be at least every 3 months, and, with the last refresh in Nov 2024 approximately 9 months ago, this is already overdue by 6 months. I will try to stay patient!

Hello @anthonycastro
Do you have any news about updating the machine images? They’re essential to run docker compose with a multi-container setup. The convenience images are insufficient for this.
We’re wrapping up the final pieces of updates to our Linux family of machine images. Those should be released within the next few days, and we’ll post an announcement here in Discuss. (Some docs + VS Code extension updates will follow shortly after that announcement)
