macOS Catalina, Xcode 11.2 Beta & Xcode 9.2 EOL

We are working on building a macOS Catalina Xcode 11.2 Beta 2 image at present.

We’ve hit an issue during the build/release cycle: we are out of space on the drives on the macOS hosts sooner than we had anticipated, due to Apple releasing Xcode 10.3, 11, 11.1 and 11.2 within three months. Historically we have had a new Xcode twice a year. This change of pace requires that we make some changes to keep up. To make space for 11.2 we have to drop support for Xcode 9.2, which is our least used image (0.2% of jobs used 9.2 over the last 7 days).

We’ve reached out by email to the folks that have built on 9.2 last week, and we will stop builds from running with 9.2 when we release 11.2.

At the same time, we have to build a new “base-image”, as we call them, with macOS 10.15 Catalina. We have more folks asking for Catalina support than we do asking for Xcode 11.2, so our plan is currently to do the following:

  • Build a new base image with macOS Catalina
  • Build an Xcode 11.2 Beta 2 image on Catalina.
  • Remove Xcode 9.2
  • Publish the Xcode 11.2 Beta 2 image.

I want to leave the removal of Xcode 9.2 for as long as possible, to allow folks as much time as possible to migrate to a newer image.

Please reach out here or through support / account managers if you have any questions of comments.

The currently supported version of Xcode are listed here, currently:

Small update: I have built a Catalina image with Xcode 11.2 Beta 2.

It’s not publicly available yet, but the first software manifest is here: https://circle-macos-docs.s3.amazonaws.com/image-manifest/v1418/index.html

The Xcode 11.2 / Catalina image is now live:
