To start, have you explored at all utilizing our “AWS Elastic Beanstalk” Orb? Here is how you could utilize it to install and configure it within a job:

If the above isn’t an option to utilize, can you provide me with the executor and image you are trying this install on? I will need to test and replicate the scenario to see if I can figure out what the issue is.

We haven’t, I will analyze if it’s possible the option of including the AWS EB Orb.

Meanwhile, I provide you with the other information to see if we can continue with this configuration:

  • Executor: Docker

  • Image: circleci/node:12.16.1

This is the step we are running to install awsebcli:

      - run:
          name: install-awscli
          command: |
            sudo apt-get -y -qq update
            sudo apt install python3-pip python3-dev
            sudo pip3 install awsebcli --upgrade

Thanks for the reply and additional details.

I think the root cause here is the version of Python3 installed on the convenience image (circleci/node:12.16.1) you are using. The version installed is Python 3.5.3 which I believe won’t have access to the version of botocore the awsebcli is expecting.

When I updated to one of our newer convenience images (cimg/node:12.16.1) I found Python 3.6.9 installed and when executing the command to install awsebcli it was able to find the proper botocore version – though, it did fail on a later step.

With the above in mind, I think you have a few options here:

  1. Keep your current setup, and set botocore==1.19.63 for the install.
  2. Try upgrading to the newest version of Python3 in the job and try the install command again.
  3. Try utilizing a newer version of one of our convenience images like cimg/node:14.17.5 (this may no be an option, but I did find that this one I referenced has Python 3.8.10 installed and the awsebcli seemed to work).

Thanks for the reply! I’m sorry for the delay in this response, I was just able to take up the subject again.

I’ve been trying to apply the other solutions you proposed:

  1. We will keep this option as a last resource since we just want it to be a temporary solution :hugs:
  2. We’ve been trying to upgrade to the newest version of python3, but it just keeps returning Python 3.5.3 version as it previously was. Doesn’t this have to do with the preinstalled node image?
            sudo apt install python3 python3-pip python3-dev --upgrade
            python3 --version
  1. We did try changing to the new cimg images, specifically cimg/node:12.16.1, since it’s the node version on which we are working, and it isn’t present in our options to upgrade it.
    This image has Python 3.6.9 running, but we had the next error when installing awsebcli:

We did try updating/reinstalling pip as the error says, and also python3-setuptools, but the same error kept showing up. The installed pip version is pip 21.2.4.

Do we have another option here?

Thanks for the follow-up here. I was able to get a newer version of Python3 installed on the cimg/node:12.16.1 image and then AWS CLI installed using this command:

      - run:
          name: install-awscli
          command: |
            sudo apt-get -y update
            sudo apt -y install software-properties-common
            sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:deadsnakes/ppa
            sudo apt -y install python3.9
            sudo apt -y install python3.9-distutils
            sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/python3 python3 /usr/bin/python3.9 1
            sudo apt install -y python3-pip python3-dev
            sudo pip3 install --upgrade setuptools
            sudo pip3 install --upgrade pip
            sudo pip3 install --upgrade distlib
            sudo pip3 install awsebcli --upgrade

Quite the run command, but seemed to do the job. I am sure there are other methods of doing this as well, but this was the first one I had that was successful. You may want to play around with it to see if you can clean it up or remove some of the installs.
