Fail immediately on background process error

We run a background server for some basic selenium browser integration tests, and we would like the build to fail immediately if the server fails to start, however what now happens is that the build times outs after 10 minutes due to no output. Is there a better way to handle this case?

A fix, for example, would be to be able to specify that the build should fail if the background process exists with a non zero status.

We need this too, we run our linters in the background and would like to fail the build if one of our background linters fails
